Health care system in Indonesia is represented by state and private medical centres. According to the statistics of 2010, over 1200 multi-field and specialised medical clinics were registered in the country. About 50% of them are state-owned, and 50% are the property of private investors.
By the beginning of 2011, Indonesia can boast with 4 medical centres accredited by JCI, all of them having received international accreditation by the Hospital Accreditation Programme ensuring high quality of medical services.
The distinguishing feature of Indonesian health care is two independent medical systems coexisting side by side: Western and traditional Oriental. The competition among these two parallel medical traditions which practically do not cross each other’s path plays into the hands of patients choosing treatment variants.
Curiously, today treatment applying traditional Oriental methods costs considerably higher than Western standard medical care. This is determined by the use of costly natural components and remedies and a sparse number of profile professionals. However, average prices both for Western and Oriental medical services in Indonesia are by 30-40 % lower than in the neighbouring Singapore, Malaysia, or South Korea.
Plastic and reconstructive surgery, alternative (folk) medicine, and general rehabilitation programmes enjoy vast popularity among overseas patients.
Recommended time for treatment: May to October.

Indonesian spa resorts are the second world favourites after the ones in the USA. Cosmetic procedure in Asian countries is a sacred rite with application of exclusively organic natural ingredients (herbs, fruits, flowers, oils, and seawater). These ingredients energise the body and heal the soul.
Many overseas patients are well aware of the healthful properties of the mysterious thalassotherapy. The majority of them strive to experience the healing power of seawater and seaweed at the world-famous resort on the Isle of Bali. This island, just as the rest of the country, offers a wide range of recreation services of varying length and cost. For example, the minimal price for a session of massage here is about €20.
The biggest secret of Indonesian health and beauty temples lies in exceptional hospitality and complaisance. Another unique feature of tropical rehabilitation and recovery centres of this gateway is the extraordinary setting of procedures. Most recovery procedures are held in the open air, in the most exotic sites — at the foot of the mountains, on the ocean coast, in tropical forests, or in the fragrant gardens. Each procedure is brought to perfection with cool breeze, distant calls of the fauna, and the aromas of exotic plants. Even the premises of spa and wellness centres necessarily have huge windows with the views on nature.
Of numerous organism recovery and rejuvenation procedures in Indonesia we may specifically mention reflexology (foot and palm massage), acupuncture, stone therapy, Ayurveda (with special diet and massage procedures), and Indonesian homeopathy.
The country has developed a range of massage techniques allowing not only achieving of full body relaxation and relief of tension and fatigue, but also treatment of various diseases or significant improvement of the overall well-being. The technique of traditional Bali massage is as follows: warm aromatic mixture is applied in the centre of your stomach or back and then distributed by gentle broad movements of hands all over the body surface. During such procedures they apply therapeutic remedies composed of spices and essential oil plants, minerals and organic components from the islands of Kalimantan, Sumatra, and New Guinea. Local massage specialists are proud with their proficiency in many types of massage: traditional Bali, Shiatsu (Japanese massage technique when massage movements are produced with figures, palms, and elbows), aromatherapeutic, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi (4-hand massage). Also greatly demanded here are massage baths and sea inhalation procedures which speed up the recovery period after giving up smoking and produce a healthful effect in case of bronchial asthma.
