Italy justly holds one of the top positions among the world countries by the quality level of medical services offered to foreign citizens. Such services are provided both in state and private medical centres, which are equally well facilitated with state-of-the-art equipment and apply advanced methods of treatment and checkup. The difference lies only in the level of additional comforts and, naturally, the price of services. Compared to state in-patient medical centres, where patients are accommodated in comfortable wards for 2-4 people, private clinics strive to surround their patients with a homely environment. Many private clinics rather resemble boarding houses or guesthouses encircled with evergreen parks. Patients are offered accommodation rooms comprising of a ward, room for accompanying persons, and a luxury bathroom. Caring service personnel will offer to select an individual menu and help organise leisure time and an cultural programme.

Medical programmes for foreign patients in Italy are usually conducted in the following fields:

  • checkup
  • plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine
  • obstetrics and gynaecology
  • neurosurgery
  • oncology
  • radiotherapy and radiosurgery
  • orthopaedics and traumatology
  • paediatrics
  • dentistry
  • surgery
  • infertility treatment applying assisted reproductive technologies

Major state and university clinics of Italy offering medical services in the surgical fields, namely neurosurgery and radiosurgery, are facilitated even better than most private clinics. They necessarily have CTs, PET, laser systems,  MRI, apply cutting-edge surgical technologies and methods: laser, endoscopic, micro- and laparoscopic surgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, radiotherapy, etc. Many medical centres are equipped with their own checkup units and laboratories, actively apply telemedicine, and offer the service of second medical opinion.

For the last decade, many foreign patients come to private plastic clinics for undergoing surgeries of nose form correction, breast augmentation and form correction. It is considered that Italian plastic surgeons are especially skilful in this field, and the cost of their services is 15-20 % lower than in France or Switzerland.

Italy also provides excellent opportunities for treating diseases in the fields of oncology, dermatology, otolaryngology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, urology, and general surgery. Many medical centres specifically develop programmes for short-term stay of patients during 1- 4 days for checkup and treatment.

Dentistry is currently a rather popular medical field, which can be perfectly combined with recreation and recovery at Italian resorts. Here you will be offered a whole range of dental services, particularly in the area of aesthetic dentistry. You get supreme quality implantation, prosthetics, also one-stage dental implant placement is possible. Dental centres are accommodated with advanced equipment and materials, widely apply digital computer radiography, lasers, etc. The prices are average for Western Europe, but still 10-20 % lower than in Switzerland, Germany, or Austria.

Italy hosts well-known centres of reproductive medicine offering foreign patients to undergo checkup and infertility treatment applying traditional and innovative technologies (intrauterine insemination with donor sperm; IVF; IVF with microsurgical fertilization technique — Intracytoplasmic sperm injection; donation, cryopreservation of oocytes, sperm, and embryos; IVF-ICSI method, which implies preliminary diagnostic screening of sperm; examination of embryos and oocytes for possible genetic diseases, and much more). Of course, surrogacy is strictly prohibited in catholic Italy.

Recommended time for treatment: March—November.

Italian recovery and spa resorts have been attracting overseas visitors for centuries. Many resorts date back to the time of antiquity. Here they apply age-old experience, advanced technologies, and the natural riches of the country — sea and thermal spring waters, and muds. Italy is the record-holder by the number of thermal springs in the Mediterranean region. The most favoured resorts among visitors from Europe, the USA, CIS countries are the following: Abano Terme, Montecatini Terme, Terme di Saturnia, Terme Sirmione on lake Garda, Fiuggi, and the Ischia island.

Abano Terme is one of the most renowned resorts of Italy located only 48 kilometres away from Venice. This was an active destination for balneo- and mud treatment since the times of the Ancient Rome. There is a number of indications for staying at this recovery resort: problems of musculoskeletal apparatus, genitourinary and respiratory systems, chronic fatigue, and skin diseases (acme, psoriasis, seborrhoeic dermatitis).

The resort valley has dozens of thermal springs with water temperature reaching 85 degrees. The chemical composition of the water is also unique (refers to the group of bromine and iodine waters), it has been forming for decades in the depths of the earth and is rich in various microelements. The spring runs from the Alpine foothills, where the water gets purified  passing through limestone and enriched with healthful salts.

Abano Terme muds are especially unique because their composition includes local thermal waters, clay, weed, and healthful microorganisms. Muds are specially prepared for therapeutic application: they are first extracted from the natural spring, and then “aged” for several months under specific conditions. Possessing one-of-a-kind therapeutic properties, these muds remove inflammations, help in healing wounds, relieve pain, as well as just relax and soak in the vital energy of this wonderful Italian land. That is why mud wrappings turned into a real ritual.

Having stayed for only several weeks at this resort, many notice their strength and health returning owing to the procedures with spring water application (sessions in steam grottos, ionized baths with mineral water, inhalations) and mud treatment. As a rule, the recovery and therapeutic programme at this resort starts from 14 days. However, there is also a contracted three-day programme.

Mineral waters and thermal muds based on volcanic clay of the Montecatini Terme resort will be most beneficial to patients with metabolism disorders, dysfunctions of stomach, liver, kidney, intestines, problems of musculoskeletal apparatus and respiratory system. For recovery purposes, water drinking courses, massages, baths, mud wrappings, and applications are prescribed.

Terme di Saturnia resort is wrapped in legend. They say it was created by gods themselves, so stunning and incredible is the appearance of luxurious natural baths with mineral waters. Hot pools are open for visitors all the year round, and the reasons for stay are chronic fatigue, stress, skin problems, and blood circulatory system disorders. The resort has earned the status of one of the most elite and expensive spa resorts in Italy. For recovery and cosmetic procedures, specialists use here waters from hot sulphurous springs and bioglea (purified extract of plankton growing on the bottom of thermal springs). Some of the exclusive procedures are gommage with natural plankton, unique stone therapy and the brand-name Saturnia Shower.

Terme Sirmione at lake Garda produces an invigorating and relaxing effect, lowers arterial pressure, stimulates the function of endocrine system, relieves allergic reactions, produce a healthful effect on bone tissues, and possess a pain-relieving effect. Most often people come for such major procedures: thermal inhalations, aerosols, showers and baths, mud treatment, physiotherapy, as well as weight-loss programme and anti-stress courses.

Hot thermal springs of the Ischia Island overlooking the sea coast, Terrene sea waters in combination with mild Mediterranean climate annually attract thousands of tourists from all over the world. Unique recovery and relaxation centres have earned fame far and wide outside Europe. Cosmetics for face and body care are produced based on thermal water and muds.

Fiuggi is one of the most popular Italian resorts. This is where the palaces of the Papal Court and of the Roman nobles are situated. Mineral water with the same name is known far beyond Italy. Its waters are inimitable in chemical composition  because it not just possesses diuretic (urinative) properties, effectively dissolves and egests kidney stones, but also prevents their formation. The mineral waters of this resort are also widely applied for podagra and joint diseases, gynaecological problems, after undergoing chemical and radio therapy. Silica contained in this water endows with health and longevity.

Recently, the scientists have discovered in Italy a previously unknown unique spring of thermal water. It is located near the town of Skarlino and has been given an unpretentious name “Smile”. Due to the high content of Lithium salts these waters are considered to be a natural antidepressant and applied for chronic fatigue, stress, and depression treatment.
