Despite its ages-long experience in sanatorium and resort recreation and recovery, Slovakia is only beginning to strike into providing treatment and diagnostic services to foreign patients. Most foreign patients, primarily from the CIS countries, Germany, and Austria, are well aware of balneological resorts of Slovakia specializing in the treatment of diseases of musculoskeletal apparatus, upper respiratory tracts, oncology, gynaecology, and neurology. However, not all medical centres of this country are housed by sanatoria. Mostly private medical centres equipped with state-of-the-art technologies are involved in the sphere of medical tourism. A great number of medical specialists undergo professional training and practice in the neighbouring Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria. The cost of medical services is very affordable and even lower than in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Medical services and patient attendance in Slovak medical centres are in step with European standards. Cosy and convenient single wards, friendly and attentive personnel guarantee comfortable conditions of stay for in-patients. One of the disadvantages is poor knowledge of foreign languages, though many medical centres employ Russian-speaking personnel.
Slovakia most frequently welcomes foreign patients coming to undergo dental treatment and prosthetics, treatment of eye diseases and laser vision correction, plastic surgery, infertility treatment, resolving endocrine problems, and for delivery.
Recommended time for treatment: March to June, September to November.
Slovakia is justly proud of its century-long tradition of balneology, has unique natural factors, and can offer high standard of services at affordable prices which even today create competition to those in the neighbouring Hungary. Located in the very heart of Europe, Slovakia offers its overseas guests excellent opportunities of resort recreation and recovery. Vyšné Ružbachy. Smrdaki, Bardejovske Kupele, Dudince, Piešťany, Turčianske Teplice are the most famous recovery resorts of Slovakia.
The resort of Bardejovske Kupele is famed for rare natural alkaline/salty ferrous acidic waters. They are applied for diseases of the digestive tract, urogenital system, respiratory organs, kidney, and urinoexcretory ways, gall bladder, cardio-vascular system, gynaecological problems, and metabolic disorders. Mineral water is prescribed for drinking courses, applied for water procedures, inhalations, mouth cavity irrigation. Major procedures include: water treatment, inhalations, electrotherapy/electric current treatment, light therapy, massages, heat therapy, gas injections, and peat applications. Besides, the resort is surrounded by coniferous forests, so the air here is exceptionally clean and fresh having a favourable influence on the health of patients with respiratory diseases.
The resort of Turčianske Teplice specialises on the diseases of kidneys, urogenital system, neurological problems, as well as child gynaecology. For treatment purposes, hydrogen carbonated, magnesium-calcium, highly fluoride-enriched, slightly acidic, thermal, hypotonic natural water of medium mineralisation is applied. The microclimate of an open salt cave is perfectly suited for patients with dermatological, nervous, and respiratory diseases.
Piešťany resort specializes on the diseases of musculoskeletal apparatus (rheumatic arthritis, development of stiffness in the spine, degenerative diseases of hip joints, arthroses, non-inflammatory spinal diseases) and neurological diseases (affection of peripheral nerves, conditions after inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system, conditions after injuries or surgeries of the central and peripheral nervous system, full or partial paralysis of one part of the body as a result of vessel affection). The resort is famed for therapeutic properties of thermal waters and sulphate mud. Major procedures are: mud applications, thermal baths, physiotherapy, electrotherapy/electric current treatment, oxygenotherapy, mechanotherapy, acupuncture, and densitometry, classical, reflective, and underwater massage.
Unique therapeutic mineral waters are also available at the resort of Dudince. They contain both sulphurated hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which makes possible parallel treatment of diseases of cardio-vascular system and musculoskeletal apparatus. Carbon dioxide favourably influences the heart and vessels, and sulphurated hydrogen removes inflammatory processes and aches in cartilages and bones.
